Is it normal for Parkinson's patients to mess up their speech?

I am a nursing student and I help care for an older lady with Parkinson’s. I find her speech isn’t normal. Actually I can’t understand really anything she says. I find that she puts a lot of random words together and her sentences don’t make sense. She can’t think of the right words to say most of the time and her words are often slurred/mumbled.

I haven’t heard of this associated with Parkinson’s and I am wondering if this normal.

Yes, speech difficulties are associated with Parkinson’s Disease. One of the characteristics, later in the progression of the disease, is that the strength of the voice declines, as well.

Dementia also characterizes later stages of PD, and that often manifests in not being able to come up with the right word.

My husband has Parkinson’s, and needs a lot of care — there are many resources available to help you make your client more comfortable and help her (and you) cope with the symptoms.

Its one of the more advanced symptoms of PD, it has alot to do with the diseases effect on the facial muscles. At an old age your client may also be exibiting some dementia which also is sometimes associated with PD (I think)
